Fishing Lake Erie

When and Where to Find Walleye in Lake Erie

Lake Erie is every angler's dream come true. It has plentiful supplies of yellow perch, steelhead, salmon, small mouth bass, and, of course, Lake Erie is most famous for its abundant supplies of walleye. But, when and where in the fourth largest lake in the country can these fish be found.

The spawning run is the absolute optimum period to fish for walleye in Lake Erie. Reproduction of walleye in Lake Erie is substantial due to the perfect conditions for spawning.

Typically, during the summer months, walleye catches are leaner, but there are still fish out there to be caught. If you do choose to venture out in pursuit of walleye during the summer, you may find it useful to switch to a faster presentation. In addition, you may need to cover as much water as possible, so it is advisable to use crankbaits and trolling spinners.

After spawning, the general consensus of opinion is that walleye are typically found in the deep waters. When walleye are in deep waters, many anglers believe that sonar is an essential tool. You may like to consider trawling the deeper waters and allowing you sonar equipment to assess the activity below. However, they are often discovered in the shallows too. Naturally, the walleye will go where there is a supply of food.

The location of the walleye in Lake Erie may also depend upon the weather. For example, if the wind has been blowing in the same direction for several days, you may like to look for a rocky point. In spots such as this, walleye have been caught in as little as 3ft of water.

You may also find it helpful to search holes in cabbage weeds. Distortion of weed lines may contain a concentration of walleye. Similarly, irregularities in the lakebed can also hold a large quantity of fish.

Some anglers favor fishing for walleye under the cover of darkness. If you are considering taking a fishing expedition at night, it is wise to consider some extra safety precautions. However, the lack of sleep can prove a labor of love when you catch the walleye that will be the envy of all your friends.

Typically, walleye are to be found in the same locations after dark as they are found during the day. However, many anglers assert that larger walleye, and greater numbers of them, can be caught after dark. Therefore, it is a good idea to do some reconnaissance of the lake during the day to ascertain the spots that you would like to try over night.

If you want to brave the night shift, the most favorable time is during the summer at daybreak. As the summer sun rises, the walleye will be immerging for the morning feed. However, as the day becomes brighter, walleyes will return to the deeper water and seek shelter in weeds. So, the window of opportunity is only slim.

More help is at hand. For the beginner, Lake Erie has numerous opportunities for charter fishing. Moreover, for the more experienced angler, there are regular fishing reports for Lake Erie.

Walleye Fishing Secrets Student Shares an Awesome Catch

"Andrew,

Here's a 25 inch walleye caught at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. The picture is a great memento for me.

I caught it drifting. We caught it amongst some smaller ones that ended up on the dinner table.

Your advice was helpful in making my trip successful. Thank you!"
