Going Outside The Box To Catch More Walleyes

Hi, Andrew Martinsen of Walleye Fishing Secrets here. You have done your homework; you know where the walleye should be and when. Despite all your careful preparation, you can't beg a walleye to get into the boat. Sometimes the only successful anglers are those who throw the conventional wisdom overboard.

You know - When it comes to walleye fishing, it's always a good plan to think and act outside the box.

Most professional anglers don't stick to strict guidelines either. Experience has taught them that success often means going to find walleye in places that no sane angler would try. Their radical thinking usually pays off as the haul award winning walleyes up out of the water.

Conventional wisdom isn't bad. It can be very helpful if you are new to the sport but it should be used as a guide. If the fish aren't biting like they should it is time to try something new.

One place that traditional thinking falls apart is in the body of water that you are fishing. Walleye will survive in lakes that aren't considered walleye waters. These lakes will lack gravel spots for spawning but will have an abundance of weed beds. Many of these lakes will have a stocking program in place to maintain the population.

The stocked walleye quickly learn to take cover in the weeds or otherwise they get eaten. As they grow they learn to hunt in the same thick vegetation. Their behavior will differ from their natural born cousins. You will find them in the weeds year round.

A nice, big leech beneath a slip bobber dropped into the weed transition zone will yield a nice return. Minnows can work but pike usually get to them before the walleyes do. Bluegills will also outdo the walleye in pursuit of a night crawler on the line.

You can suspend your bait anywhere from one to four feet above the bottom. The deeper the water usually means the farther from the floor you can be. Weed walleye spend a good portion of their time suspended near the bottom. And don't seem to mind coming up to get a meal.

Another rule of thumb that doesn't always stand up is the bait, or lack there of, on your hook. Many anglers believe that night crawlers are bait reserved for late summer fishing. As early as May, walleye will eagerly inhale these large, squirming meals if they are in the mood.

Sometimes you don't even need to add live bait to incite a strike; it is a hard bite to swallow but true. A jig with a plastic tail out does the minnow harness when the water is still chilly. Even a simple Shad Rap trolled over flats at night will hook the walleye. Let the Shad Rap sit about forty feet behind the boat as you motor your way along.

Walleye will surprise you every time that you fish. They will take lures or baits in sizes and shapes that you never dreamed that they would be interested in. You don't need to ignore all the conventional wisdom to catch walleye. Just be willing to try something new. It's time for you to surprise the walleye this time a round.

Great Fishin'!,

25 Inch Walleye Caught at Lake of the Woods

Walleye Fishing Secrets Student Shares an Awesome Catch

"Andrew,

Here's a 25 inch walleye caught at Lake of the Woods, Ontario. The picture is a great memento for me.

I caught it drifting. We caught it amongst some smaller ones that ended up on the dinner table.

Your advice was helpful in making my trip successful. Thank you!"
