Andrew Martinsen's Walleye Fishing Update
Speed Trolling Map Success Utilizing Topo Maps
and Speed Trolling to Pull in More Walleye
An advanced speed trolling technique involves the
use of a topographic map and a depth finder. Troll over
areas where there is underwater structure shown on
the map, using the fish finder and the depth finder to
locate where the Walleye are and what depth they are
staying at.
Many anglers troll in an S pattern, but trolling a contour
line may be a better option on certain days and in
certain waters.
Troll the contour of the shore, staying out far enough to
be over deeper water, and moving from one structure
to the next.
Troll in a back and forth motion along the contour,
varying the speed from two or two and a half miles an
hour all the way up to four or five miles an hour.
Pay attention to what is working. If varying the speed of
your trolling does not work, try to switch to a live bait
harness or a jig, so that you can use the speed of the
trolling to bump the lure up and down on the bottom of
the water column.
Using a bottom bouncer or spoon when trolling along at
higher speeds may be effective, but many times these
lures will not stay at the depth you want them to be if
your trolling speed is high.
Do not be wary of trying new techniques, or switching
up tactics at any time.
Speed trolling can catch you more walleye. But make certain
to always keep safety in the front of your mind. If something
seems like too great of a risk out there, it likely is. Staying
safe should be priority number one always. Have fun on
the water, and stay safe!
