Andrew Martinsen's Walleye Fishing Update

Falling into Walleyes

The One-Track Mind of the Autumn Walleye

Like winter, during fall the walleyes head out deep.

They are on a serious mission during the fall to eat as much as they can possibly stuff into their gills as they bulk themselves up for the long winter ahead and as preparation for spawning.

Lucky for you and I, the walleye is at a permanent buffet table for the entire fall! They really do have a one-track mind during this time, because all they can think about is food.

Walleye aren't the only fish to head to the deeper waters in the fall. Their prey does as well.

Why?

Because by this time of the year their food, which is located in shallow areas, is no longer available. So, conveniently for the walleye, there are plenty of minnows around in the deeper waters during the time of year that the leaves are falling above water.

When scouting out a spot to fish in the fall, look for steep dropoff points that are anywhere from 75 - 90 degrees in angle and taller than 20 feet. These will bring you the most success by far.

The walleyes will travel up the ledge of the dropoff, eat, then head back toward bottom. They will do this several times per day.

This extremely predictable behavior makes it almost too easy to bag walleyes in the evening during the fall because they will keep going up for food day and night in the same spot.

Try jigging a spoon and prepare to be bowled over with walleye.
